History of Pankade Kaardikeskus

Kaardikeskus was founded in August 31st 1993 by two Estonian Commercial Banks. Reasons for founding Kaardikeskus were:

- to share international connection expenses
- to develop interoperability between the banks in ATM and POS networks
- to establish card acceptance standard in Estonia

Eesti Ühispank (now SEB) joined Kaardikeskus in 1996. Since then Kaardikeskus has been the only player in processing business in Estonia.

Kaardikeskus acted as common development centre for the Commercial Banks. Among others, EMV solution and certification, e-commerce and m-commerce solutions and ATM hosting were developed there. Kaardikeskus is acting as a roundtable of Banks on Risk and Fraud issues.
